A step-by-step guidebook, Do It Yourself‘ by Thomas Bärnthaler is a DIY’ers blueprints for making home furnishings, lighting, and everyday objects dreamed up by 50 leading international designers and artists such as Ai Weiwei, Yves Behar, Sam Hecht, Hella Jongerius and Faye Toogood.
Every project includes hand-drawn step-by-step illustrations, photographic lists of tools and materials, plus details of the cost and time needed to complete. The biography for each designer also reveals the inspiration behind the design.
The book challenges us to look beyond the branding and see everyday objects in a whole new light. The “Floating Forest” seed germinator, by London-based Michael Anastassiades only costs $7 and takes 20 minutes to make. Inspired by a vase by Swedish designer Estrid Ericson, it allows you to see an acorn or avocado pit grow and eventually blossom.
