LA based Christian, founder of Roots Rose Radish, talks about launching a 100% natural skin care, herbalism and making product people will love.
GOING BACK TO THE ROOTS
http://fantastic-ideas.com/services/consultancy I trained as a herbalist, and during my studies I started to think how to get plants back into people life. Plants have, since the dawn of time, been part of ancient wisdom. They have helped us to heal from different sorts of ailment and have been an essential part of our wellness. Since the advent of pharmaceuticals, we have got very far from traditional wisdom and nature in general. There is a certain interest these days are getting interested in the food they are eating; they are interested in gardening, in farming, in community supported agriculture. People are becoming more aware of the world that surround them, where the food comes from, and skincare is a natural extent of all that. So I thought this was a bridge; this was a way to get into people, and get them thinking about their product and get them inspired to think about the rest of their life. Not only where their skincare comes from but also their clothes, where they are manufactured and how connected we are to the planet.
THINK 100 % NATURAL
http://webuk.co/wp-json/oembed/1.0/embed?url=http://webuk.co/casson-beckman We grow our own ingredients, and we work with local farmers and beekeepers and then we wildcraft which means we go into the natural habitat to take some of the plants. We try to use as much as we can from North America but then there are certain plants that don’t grow here like Shea butter o we have to get it from other countries, but we make sure they are all ethically produced, and they are organic.
MAKE PRODUCT YOU LOVE
here We don’t pay for advertising; we are lucky to have good press. I started with the intention to create a product that was 100% natural. There was not much competition in the market; many products have natural ingredients, but they still have preservatives, or had too much water and alcohol, we don’t use water and alcohol. Water cheapens the product it dilutes it and makes it less expensive, alcohol is dry to the skin. I wanted to make a quality product, I used to try all these different products, and I wanted something that would nourish and rebuild my skin, giving me all the benefits that a lot of products in the market don’t really give.
That’s the thing, people try the product and they come back, we have so many repeating costumers; they just love it and will not use another cream again. The product does really sell itself, and it’s how it should be. We put most of the money back into the product if we would put all the money in advertisement and marketing our products would be a lot more expensive.
CHRISTIAN ON BUSINESS:
Don’t try to sell anything that you wouldn’t want to buy yourself. I felt that there was nothing that was good enough, so this is why I created the products, I said let’s just make my own. That’s really what it comes down to you have to create a product with integrity ‘casue I think that what’s people want. People are realizing; they don’t want watered down cheap things anymore, they want good quality things
In general, I find that people are way over fed but undernourished; they eat a lot of fatty foods that feels really good, but do very little in nourishing and building our body. If we build our body’s cells on food that produces excess “heat” in the sense of Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine, you will see more inflammation, skin irritations, poor digestion and absorption and other heat conditions. Some examples of “heat” in our diet are: alcohol, sugar, bread, cookies, pastries, refined carbohydrates, basically all the fun stuff. What makes breaking away from these foods easy is if you think about how you feel before and after eating these things. You will be able to establish a connection with what this does to the body. I love cakes and chocolates, but I try to live in balance and moderation. Build your body on the the good stuff and then sprinkle in some of the sweets to nourish the soul. It is easy to forget that our body is constantly striving to balance itself and is always in fluctuating homeostasis. It has organ systems in place that work to detoxify (liver, kidney, skin) and absorb all the nourishment we need. All we have to do is try our best to support it.
Herbal medicine is something that we as people all new. It was traditionally passed by elders to younger generations, but we have lost all of that. It’s an empowering thing for women, women at the time had the recipes, the formulas, they knew how to heal. We just got so far from nature. I try to encourage every woman to play around, I started everything in my kitchen, it’s simple it doesn’t have to be complicated.
HOW TO NOURISH YOUR SKIN AND HAIR WITH NATURAL PRODUCTS:
Take an avocado and make it into a mash, pack it on your hair, leave it on for an hour. It restores all the oils. It’s my favorite hair treatment.
FOR THE SKIN:
Wash your skin with honey or do a honey mask. Use organic honey. It moisturize, helps replenish the skin. Many products out there get rid of all the natural oil of the skin so that’s why you need to moisturize it a lot. But our body doesn’t need that much really, it’s all that we do to our body actually that makes us need more products. Honey also helps for blemishes and pimples, just put it on the spot and leave it for the night.
